Abstract: This photograph (circa 1940, Carleton Street,
Saint John, New Brunswick) shows the Jewish
Home Beautiful pageant being performed in what
appears to be a gymnasium (note the basketball
hoop) in a Jewish community center or school.
Description: "The dramatic version of The Jewish Home Beautiful
was originally presented ...in 1932, with Table
Exhibits that appeared in the Women's League
Outlook in 1933. The narrative version of The
Jewish Home Beautiful ... was presented at the
National Convention of the Women's League at the
Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Atlantic City in May 1940.
Most of the photographs of the tables in this book
were taken at that time. The dramatic version ...
was presented at the Joint Sisterhood Assembly in
the Temple of Religion at the World's Fair in
September 1940." From The Jewish Home Beautiful,
which consisted of a script for a pageant and
collection of recipes. The pageant was to be
presented by mothers and their married daughters.
By sharing the role of hostess at each of the
holiday tables in the pageant, they would
symbolize "the transmission of the tradition from
one generation to another." The purpose of the
pageant was to "urge every mother of Israel to
assume her role as artist, and on every festival,
Sabbath and holiday, to make her home and her
family table a thing of beauty as precious and
elevating as anything painted on canvas or
chiseled in stone... A little skill and love and
understanding can transform the humblest
surroundings into a sanctuary more holy and
beautiful than the house decorated elaborately,
but without love and intelligence and religious
warmth." Betty Davis Greenberg and Althea Osber
Silverman, The Jewish Home Beautiful (New York:
New York Women's League United Synagogue of
America, 1941).
