Nathaniel Deutsch is Associate Professor of Religion at Swarthmore College. This year he is a Guggenheim fellow and is also the Workmen's Circle/Dr. Emmanuel Patt Visiting Professor of Eastern European Jewish Studies at YIVO and a visiting professor at Stanford. His books include The Maiden of Ludmir: A Jewish Holy Woman and Her World, which was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award; Guardians of the Gate: Angelic Vice Regency in Late Antiquity; The Gnostic Imagination: Gnosticism, Mandaeism, and Merkabah Mysticism; and Black Zion: African American Religious Encounters with Judaism, which he co-edited.
Miriam Isaacs is Visiting Associate Professor in Yiddish language and culture at the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies and the Department of Germanic Studies and the University of Maryland. Her publications include: "Pious Voices: Languages Among Ultra-orthodox Jews," International Journal of the Sociology of Languages (1999), a special issue that she coedited and in which her article "Haredi, Haymish and Frim: Yiddish Vitality and Language Choice in a Multilingual Community" appeared. She is currently working on a book about the range of Yiddish culture and its uses as a tool of empowerment in the Displaced Person's camps in Germany, Austria and Italy in the immediate aftermath of World War II.
