| Abstract: | "A section of a restored torah used by Temple Emanu-El, in Birmingham, Ala., is shown Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004. The torah was used by a synagogue in Czechoslovakia for about 100 years before it was taken by the Nazis and placed with other religious artifacts taken from synagogues throughout Europe. The torah was donated to Temple Emanu-el by Paul and Janis Friedman and was recently restored by the synagogue. The scroll will be rededicated Saturday in honor of Holocaust victims as part of Yom Kippur services." (AP Photo/The Birmingham News, Alexander Cohn). |
