Sites: Eldridge Street Project
Originally built in 1887, the Eldridge St. Synagogue is the only synagogue in the neighborhood to have been granted national landmark status. The building has remained in use for worship throughout its history; however, the congregation meets in the building’s basement, not in its main sanctuary, which fell into disrepair over the years, and is currently undergoing restoration. In addition to providing visitors the opportunity to observe the restoration in process, the Eldridge St. Project offers a variety of exhibitions and public programs dealing with immigrant Jewish culture and Lower East Side history. The project's goal is to make the restored synagogue the focal point of a Jewish heritage center for the 21st century.
