Class Projects: Film Festivals as Ritualized/Religious Events

Exercise One

Compare the programming schedules of three different festivals. Consider the implications of their choices of film content and framing (which films do programmers package together and why, what types of post-screening discussions and other programs do they create, what language do they use to describe the films, etc.) Compare the ways in which Holocaust films are programmed and framed in three different festivals and consider the effects of these choices for audiences.

Exercise Two Consider the various ways in which specific festival programs structure conversations about a wide range of Jewish identifications. What different demonstrations of Jewishness appear (i.e. politically, religiously, geographically, through sexual orientation) and how do the festivals frame these filmic approaches?
