Daniel Ben-Hur

Daniel Ben-Hur at work

Daniel Ben-Hur (1958-), an Israeli artist living in Berlin, creates patterned drawings using characters from the Latin and Hebrew alphabets. Inspired by the 13th century Spanish mystic Abraham Abulafia, Ben-Hur achieves a meditative state through letter repetition. In various Aktions or performance pieces, Ben-Hur chants a letter and repeatedly draws it on paper or walls using graphite or crayon. He draws blindfolded and in awkward positions in an effort to shift his attention inward to metaphysical matters.
